Jim Anderson and Darcy Proper to Discuss Record Mastering

Recording engineers Darcy Proper and Jim Anderson will share their expertise on the record mastering process during the New York Audio Show.  Darcy and Jim won a 2013 Grammy for their work on Patricia Barber’s album, “Modern Cool”.  Produced by the Chester Group, presented by PMC Speakers, The Sound Organization and SoundStageDirect.com, the From Studio to You session will take place April 12-14 at the New York Palace Hotel.

Discussions will cover the how the mastering process builds a bridge between professional audio and high end audio.  Proper will explain the similarities and differences between these two disciplines and how the mastering process works.

Proper is a 4 time Grammy award winner and has received seven additional nominations. Currently with Wisseloord Studio in Belgium, she has worked on a wide range of music including mastering historical reissue albums for Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash and Andre Hazes. Other projects include stereo and 5.1 front-line releases for Steely Dan, The Eagles, R.E.M, Donald Fagen, Porcupine Tree, Peter Maffay, Toots Thielmans and Sohne Mannheims.

Anderson is recognized as a master of acoustic recordings and has produced for recording, radio, television and film.  He will play examples from the 5.1 surround verison of “Modern Cool” re-release and Barber’s latest album “Smash”.  He will cover how each album was mastered.  Both “Modern Cool” and “Smash” were mixed at Skywalker Ranch.

Anderson has been working with Barber for more than 20 years and has recorded nine of her albums. He is a 10-time Grammy winner as well as the recipient of two George Foster Peabody Awards for radio programs and two Emmy nominations for television shows. Anderson is currently on the faculty of NYU Tisch Arts/Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and has recorded projects for Toshiko Akiyoshi, Patricia Barber, Terence Blanchard, James Carter, Ron Carter, Jon Fadis, Joe Henderson, J.J. Johnson, Lorin Maazel, Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Maria Schneider, McCoy Tyner, Phil Woods and John Zorn. He has been the audio producer for PBS for “In Performance at the White House” and The Kennedy Center Gala with the National Symphony.”
