INTRODUCTION
The 2006 Vacuum Tube Valley Expo at LAX Embassy Suites suffered from near-zero attendance, in spite of the presence of hugely interesting gear, including those from Audio Note, Bauls Audio, De Havilland, Tonian Labs, etc. Empty hallways notwithstanding, its lack of bodies became a paradise and a retreat for what few of us coming from the Stereophile Show at Sheraton Gateway. It was maybe a five-minute walk around the little alley that ran between the hotels; but alas, my wife refused to walk under the baking sun of Southern California with her pretty heels. So, $5 of taxi it was. Nowadays, the cabs charge you a $1 fuel-surcharge on top of the trip.
We went to the VTV during the Saturday and Sunday, and had a quiet, late lunch sitting in the open lobby on the second day, enjoying the tranquility of the little waterfall and the wonderful ambiance. You would swear you heard chirps. As a venue, Embassy Suites is not ideal. As the rooms form the structure surrounding the hollow space in between, each door opened with music blasting from within was immediately throwing its sound into the open. Unless Embassy Suites is not weary of having its peaceful and slow-paced atmosphere that is appreciated by its hotel guests turned into a noisy and busy one, I can't imagine the scene had it been jammed packed with spectators.
On with the Show!
