Scaena iso-linear array speaker
The Scaena room was packed. It was nearly impossible to get to sit in the best-sounding spots, but this ultra-high-end system sounded great nonetheless. Dynamic, airy but full of flesh and presence, fast and clean sound was everything you’d expect from a system of this caliber. Can’t wait to have more time in front of this gear at another show.
Sony and Nordost Cables
A very pleasant sound from these new speakers from Sony. While in the room there was a demo of the Nordost Purple Flare vs. the Nordost Red Dawn LS speaker cables. The Red Dawn is two steps up the product line and about a $1,000 more expensive, that is, roughly $900 vs. $1,900. And what a difference it made. While the Purple Flare is a fine cable, the Red Dawn improved the clarity in the bass, openness of air around the singer and instruments, and increased the transients and pace of the music. This was a room worth spending time in.
Mooo Mat
Yes, that is correct. You are seeing cow skin turntable mats. $50 from Amazon. And while not ‘cheap’ per se, (the full cow skins from Ikea are $200 or so), this is really almost too out there not to try. Under the cow hide is a cork vibration absorbing mat.
Soundsmith
There were several rooms using only smaller bookshelf speakers and Soundsmith was one. What an impressive sound they made. Sounding significantly larger than they are, with punchy bass, dynamics, and passion. Can’t wait to hear more of these.
