Yes, we’re quarantined. Yes, we’re locked down. No, that does not give you a reason, a rationale, an excuse to trod out some introspective navel-gazing shallow attempt at impressing with your depth, or in this case lack thereof. Lady Gaga’s SHALLOW notwithstanding, no artist/musician/composer gets a pass on NARP. There are NO free rides. No legacies, no phoning it in.
Enough with my ranting:
Joe Hisaishi is known for his soundtracks and rightfully so, but I just took a listen to his take on Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring leading the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and his restraint and subsequently that of the orchestra endeared me to this recording all the more.
If you’re not familiar with Ambrose Akinmusire you’d better start now. He’s always on the road to somewhere, there’s no indecision here. It may take you as long to make the journey, but that’s Ambrose setting it all out in front of you.
Jazz Sabbath took me for quite the unexpected ride. If I”m honest I thought this just might be a cheese-take on Black Sabbath but boy was I wrong, even though such a project could yield some gems. Do yourself a solid this Sunday (tomorrow) and plonk yourself down for a listen.
Famous Groupies’ Rehearsing The Multiverse… the album cover speaks for itself. You should be able to determine from and by whom the record is influenced.
I’m an unabashed fan of Penderecki’s composition and will take them anyways I can get them and the Atom String Quartet’s jazzy approach is both novel and inviting. A great introduction to the late great Krzysztof Penderecki.
