The Beatnik Boppin’ in New Orleans

By: |

Jack Roberts Beatnik's JourneyMy wife Becky is a huge college women’s basketball fan. So, she wanted to go to New Orleans this year for the “Women’s Final Four.” We hadn’t been back there since we moved from the Southeast to the San Francisco Bay Area 13 years ago, so I jumped at the chance to go.

If you have never been to New Orleans you owe it to yourself to go. The great American playwright “Tennessee” Williams said, “America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland.” Of the three, New Orleans is truly the city for jazz and party lovers.

When I was in Paris a few years ago I was shocked at how much jazz there was in the city, but it pales in comparison to New Orleans. We arrived on Saturday evening and our first order of business was to get up and go to the world famous Jazz Brunch at the Palace Cafe. The music, the murals, and oh yeah the food was incredible.

One of the great things about New Orleans is how they honor and celebrate their great jazz heritage. Another great thing is that there is free music everywhere.

I was blown away by how good many of the street musicians were. The two pictured were good enough to perform anywhere.

I hope I have whetted your appetite for live music and maybe even a trip to New Orleans! Keep Boppin’ till next month.
