And then there were … Liner Notes
I’m taking advantage of the Miscellany in Re-Issues, Re-Masters & Miscellany to champion and bring light to the work of one Eleanor Bindman. It is no secret that Bach’s Cello Suites for Solo Cello are some of my favorite pieces of music, and over the years I have collected dozens of recordings on the cello, and then the violin, viola da gamba, and the guitar, but not until now has there been a transcription for the piano. We/I have Eleanor Bindman to thank for this, and the unintended and unexpected wait has been well worth the …. Kudos to Eleanor and her painstaking work in transcribing and not embellishing upon the Suites.
Janis Ian’s Folk Is The New Black turns back time. It’s as if she’s never left, and her lyrics are so on-point, so timely. To those familiar this album is so welcome, to those unfamiliar, listen all the way through and explore her entire discography for the first of many times.
Barry Gibb & Friends’ Greenfield: The Gibb Brothers Songbook Vol.1 brought back so many happy memories. There were four Gibbs including Andy, and Barry outlived them all. This poignant compilation with the assistance of many musical friends does indeed pay tribute to the Brothers Gibb and their combined/respective legacies.
Aaron Frazer’s Introducing …, his debut album is a stand-out recording in his own style, but at the same time paying tribute to the forerunners, those who inspired him. So if the music sounds familiar, it is but tinged with and by Aaron through and through. I listen to him sing and I hear Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and lyrically Gil-Scott Heron, to name a few. That’s some pretty good company with which to keep.
He might be familiar to some of you as the co-lead singer and multi-instrumentalist for Durand Jones & The Indications. Frazer wrote “Morning in America” and sang lead on “Is It Any Wonder?” Drumming and sing with that falsetto of his, it just works, thanks in part to Dan Auerbach’s production talents.
