And then there were … Liner Notes
What the … Talk about a full-house. I did not see this onslaught coming this week.
Armel Dupas’ Organ Trio is comprised of Armel Dupas on piano, organ, Kenny Ruby: bass, synths, Mathieu Penot: drums, synths. You’ll be hearing a lot more about this trio as time progresses, and even more about the genius of Armel Dupas. I have included in this NARP a 6-disc set of Armel Dupas Jammin’ with Friends. Within seconds of hearing the first track, I knew this album was going to be on repeat-play for the rest of the day.
Deborah Gibson will always be Debbie to me and her M.Y.O.B is such a fun romp, finding her in top form and voice. There was no way this was not going to earn a spot. Happy, upbeat and dare I say it, infectious, in only the very best way possible.
Coda Piano Trio – Coda Piano Trio (aka The White Album) The trio is also known as Kazusou Oda and is made up of Ryosuke Tanaka on bass, Yosuke Omiya on drums, and Coda on piano. If you have not twitched it by now the trio hail from Japan and shockingly only got together in 2019. In that short amount of time, they have captivated audiences and now me.
Janis Ian – Hope is a collection of 12 archival tracks from anywhere between 1976 and 2011. The majority of the tracks on this compilation have never been heard before.
‘All tracks are unedited, ranging from cassettes to 1/4″ reels later transferred to DAT for preservation. One was recorded life straight to a Mackie board (“Here Comes the Night”); others were casually laid down by Janis as she sat on a couch at home and sang into a DAT player, or in a local studio where she sat down with a guitar to get a new song down on tape. No editing, no auto-tuning, no attempts to make them sound more “professional”. There’s some hiss, there are a few mistakes. That’s what happens when you make art! Any noise artefacts you may hear are part of the original. As little as possible has been done to render these recordings usable.’ (from the Janis Ian official website)
Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – The Democracy! Suite, and Death Cab For Cutie – The Georgia EP share something in common, something wonderful. Both albums honour democracy, the recent elections and a changing of the tide, a momentous event in America’s rather recent history. Knowing what prompted these recordings makes them all the more poignant.
