I was sweating this week out as my as it was just about over before the onset of the deluge. A truly mixed bag and some welcome new releases from old friends and acquaintances:
The Pretenders’ Hate for Sale: the vocals and the guitar work so distinctive. For all, you kids of the ’70s and early ’80s have at it.
Kansas’ The Absence of Presence: there’s no mistaking the sound or the band. If Kansas is your bag, then dig in and make a meal of it.
Jimmy Heath’s Love Letter: Jimmy left us earlier this year and if this is to be his final recorded statement, then well played, very well played on him.
Q-bism’s Corduroy Shorts: I’m a sucker for any album with Corduroy as the artist or as part of the album title. Somehow funk cannot be too far behind.
Lianne La Havas’ self-titled eponymous album (how’s that for redundancy?) shall not disappoint. You get what you expect and more.
Roger Eno and Brian Eno’s Mixing Colours: The Brothers Eno can be chill, and truly contemplative. Let yourself get lost in the …
Ana Carla Maza’s La Flor: what a surprise, did not see this one coming. I listened to this more than a few times this week.
Atlas 4tet’s Eclipse: where have they been hiding?
And for those Bassoon junkies check out Theo Plath.
Onward to the vault.
If you’re fans of the band AC/DC and/or the bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones you hit the jackpot this week in the re-issues/re-masters sweepstakes.
I, for one, was jazzed to hear Art Blakey & The Messenger’s Just Coolin’ and Elvis Jones’ Jazz Machine at Onke’s.
Finally, who cannot smile while listening to T-Rex’s Electric Warrior?
