Omega Super 3T Single-Driver Monitors Review

By: |

Reference Recordings makes some of the best Classical recordings I have heard. Port of Call, featuring Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra and mastered by the legendary Keith Johnson, is a superb recording musically, and also for testing what a transducer or any other piece of gear can or cannot do. The recording has exceptional layering of the Minnesota Orchestra. The music is extremely dynamic and has very extended dynamic range.

The Super 3T did not disappoint me on this recording. I could easily hear the orchestra spread out in the sound stage with proper layering, and could identify the different sections of the orchestra. The Super 3T was extremely fast in reproducing the dynamics of this recording; I felt like I was transformed live to the recording session. On Espana Rhapsody I could hear the hall acoustics very clearly and hear very deep into the rear of the sound stage.

Listening to The Firebird Suite on Telarc’s outstanding SACD recording of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of Paavo Javri, again I was impressed with the Super 3T. The layering of the orchestra again was very accurate. The sound stage extends wall-to-wall outside the speakers; the orchestra was spread out very deep and wide. I have heard very few speakers in this price range perform as well with layering and sound stage.

The focus is pinpoint and there is very good space and air between the different sections of the orchestra. The speed is exceptional. I could hear each section starting and stopping on a dime. This speaker accurately provided me with a good window into the orchestra.

Summary

Louis Chochos has designed a terrific speaker for a very reasonable price. The cabinet design on the Omega Super 3T is high-end furniture quality, with outstanding workmanship, including the finish. The real value lies with 3T’s sound. The speaker is very musical, and this is immediately apparent with whatever recording is used. The fact that it cost $495 a pair makes purchasing a pair a no brainer.

The Super 3T fits perfectly in my home office and is impressive in what performance one can achieve with some careful system matching. The Woo WA5 gave it more body and the bass and treble were more extended. The WA5 with the tubes used cost $4600 and is a true high-end amplifier that will let you hear everything the Super 3T can do.

The Dared 2A3 amplifier at a street price of $850, with the Oppo BDP 95 priced at $1000, made the Super 3T really come to life. The synergy with the Dared amplifier is outstanding. The little Dared SET had a touch less bass and treble extension but is a more romantic sounding amplifier than the Woo WA5. The Dared and Omega combo is very addicting; I would lose myself in music for hours on end listening to this combination. The speaker provided more musicality than other speakers I have auditioned in this price range. The Super 3T can be used with just about any integrated amplifier or separate components.

The Omegas Super 3T is an outstanding speaker and a great value. If you have a home office or a small room the Super 3T will feel right at home. The system with the Dared amplifier and Oppo Bdp95 totaled $2350 without the Nordost cord and cables I used. The Nordost cables added another $1800.00 to the system. The total review gear used minus the WA5 was $4150. The system was very synergistic and was musical and very addicting. The WA5 added more cost to the system and will be the amplifier I use most to drive the Super3T.

The Super 3T should be on your short list if you are in the market for a high quality monitor. The sound to price ratio is off the charts good. Louis Chochos is to be commended for the quality of his workmanship and for bringing to the industry a true high-end speaker that any music lover could afford. The Omega Super 3T gets my highest recommendation and I have sent off the check to Omega to purchase the review sample. They will reside in my home office and will be a pleasant addition for my daily listening sessions. If you are looking for a system for easy listening, the Super 3T is an excellent product that deserves your attention, The Omega is a terrific value and recommended highly.

Thanks for the lovely review Frank. I am particularly interested in the fact that you had this set up in a near field configuration as that works for me.

    • Frank Iacone says:

The setup I used the 3T for was near field. The 3T has small port but works well against the wall and is perfect for low wattage tube amps. You can use it near field or away form the wall also.

Thanks for that. Was there any suggested guideline for – or did you find best results in – having them a minimum number of inches offset from a rear wall? Surely, they’re not flush against the wall right (toe-in angle aside)?

    • Frank Iacone says:

Louis said these were designed to go against a wall or could be used away from the wall. In my downstairs Den they are near field. I will be setting them up in my speaker room this weekend and away from the wall about 2 feet and about 5ft apart in a 10X10 room.

    • Frank Iacone says:

Actually downstairs they were flush against the wall. In the upstairs room they are now two feet out off the wall. They are not toed in and firing straight ahead. The room is 10X10

Fantastic write up Frank! These looks like great near-field speakers. Thanks!

I’ve seen your review of Audience The One single driver speaker. How does the Omega Super 3T compare to them. Looking for bedroom system. Are the Audience worth the extra expense? Would I’d be missing much?
    Thanks

Thanks for the inspiring review, Frank.

Based on your review, and conversations with Louis Chochos, I ended up purchasing the big brother to the Super 3T — the Super 3S — with the Dared 2A3C integrated amplifier and Kinber Kable 4PR speaker cables. I already had a Marantz UniversalDisc player and some high-end interconnects.

It’s a beautiful system, with a full and musical sound, lots of detail, great voices, excellent bass (the Super 3T goes to 38Hz) — and the price is incredibly affordable for this level of sound quality.

    Absolutely superb.
