Nowadays, when I go to the record store, I no longer feel weary about picking a possibly dreadful sounding disc from an otherwise reputable ensemble or conductor, because latest studio techniques, such as Deutsche Grammophon’s […]

Background Some dynamic loudspeaker manufacturers consider the preservation of a music signal’s spectral coherency their top design priority, and often favors the 2-way approach. Although many manufacturers offer more than just the 2-way designs and companies producing strictly 2-way speakers are few, oftentimes these companies’ best efforts are their 2-way designs. Jacob George is the creative force behind Rethm Loudspeakers, which was founded in 1998. Despite his relatively light background in speaker designs, JG’s highly sculpted creations were envisioned to incubate a new level of fidelity, and the drivers he adopted for realizing his vision are the Lowther’s. Foreword In dynamic scaling of instruments and in energizing the listening space, the pair of Tannoy Churchill Wideband that I reviewed in December, 2003 with its Dual-Concentric™ way of sound dispersion had surpassed feat performed by my former forerunner in this area, the Apogee Duetta Signature. At this point, the Tannoy Churchill Wideband holds the […]

Other times, it’s because we are reviewing equipment for a publication (paper or electronic). Most of the time, it’s simply because it’s fun and informative […]

1877 was one of the most tumultuous years in the life of the Russian composer, Peter Tchaikovsky. A homosexual in an intolerant age, Tchaikovsky was working on his Symphony No. 4 when he entered into a matrimony with an infatuating female pupil, the only marriage he would ever have in his life. The tragic effect […]

Foreword The increasingly popular application of minimonitors as main speakers in a home theatre is understandably wife-decreed in many cases, with the exception of readers who own very large family room fitting for a pair of the largest Apogees and the likes. But minimonitors used to rule the industry. A reign of the minimonitors took […]

In the past two decades, numerous readings of Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition and Night On Bald Mountain by other conductors and ensembles were inevitably compared to the Telarc/Maazel accomplishment. Some groups provided greater insights in many passages; but ultimately they failed to distinguish themselves significantly from one another. Most importantly, none of them could […]

It is hard to accept any other Four Seasons after having lived with Berlin Philharmonic’s version with its massive string section. I, like any classical music admirer worth his salt, bought my first copy of the quintessential piece the moment it was available on CD in 1984. The fact that I was fortunate enough to […]
